An internal thoracic artery (ITA) is a branch of the aorta that allows blood to flow in the form of a conduit from the heart to the lower extremities. This conduit is where blood has a chance to flow without having to get its way through the arteries in the way that blood travels in a person’s body. It is also where blood doesn’t have to get through the side branches of the aorta.

If you are a thoracic surgeon, I guess you have an interest in this. But if you are an aneurysm specialist, internal thoracic arteries can be dangerous. ITA’s can be dangerous when the patient has a heart attack, or when the patient is subjected to high blood pressure. So if you are someone whose job it is to take care of these arteries, I would strongly advise that you get a second opinion on this.
