If you haven’t seen this, it’s a short video that I created about the brain. Not only does it explain how the brain works, but it also gives you a peek into the neurons that are responsible for our thoughts and behaviors.

The main purpose of neurons is to fire. This is the process that allows neurons of the brain to “speak” to one another. It’s pretty simple really: A neuron fires if it receives a signal from another neuron. But how do they communicate? Well, neurons can send “messages” to one another by passing information along a long string of electrical impulses. The brain is a big network of neurons, so as they fire together they send back “messages” or electrical signals.

A key part of neurons communication is that they send “signals” through the brain’s blood vessels. For example, a nerve cell in the brain’s occipital lobe can send a message to a nerve cell in the brain’s temporal lobe.

That is the brain’s information-processing center. The ability to send this information is called brain plasticity. We can learn new skills by practicing new ways of thinking. For example, I can learn how to play chess by practicing against my mother.

So the next time you hear someone say, “I’ve never been to an arcade,” you should always reply, “I’ve never been to an arcade either.

That is the brain. The occipital lobe is responsible for everything from recognizing faces to seeing colors. The temporal lobe is the part of the brain responsible for sound.
