Our brains are made up of about 60% water and hydrogen atoms. The water and hydrogen atoms are the building blocks of the brain, and can be changed into energy, such as insulin, that can be used to fuel cells, build neural networks, and turn on the brain to learn.
So how would a brain be built with the water and hydrogen atoms, and then changed into insulin? That’s a pretty big thing, but the more we know about how our brain works, the more we know how little we really understand.
Scientists are using a process called “high-resolution X-ray diffraction” to figure out just how much water and hydrogen molecules are in the brain. Through a series of experiments, researchers have been able to figure out the number of water and hydrogen atoms in each cell of the brain. Based on that, they’ve estimated the amount of water and hydrogen atoms in the brain to be less than 10 percent of the total.
It’s amazing how much of our brain is water and how little of it is hydrogen. While our brain is roughly the same size as a grain of rice, it has more water in it than a grain of rice. So our brain, no matter how we slice it, seems to have a surprisingly high water content.
The average brain contains about 4.5% water. So if you wanted to make the brain even more watery, you would just divide that number by 4.5. The water content of the brain is more than 100 times greater than the water content of a grain of rice.
This is why the brain is so important, and why we need it to be watery enough that we can walk, talk, and think. Our brain is one of the most water-filled places on our bodies. Just look at the cells on our heads. Water is the “life” of the brain. Think of how many cells there are in the brain and you’ll get the idea. All those cells are water.
There are also plenty of other things that your brain does that are so important to our health and well-being.
